Terms of Use

Effective 2026-08-01

Thank you for using ABYSS (“the Service”). These terms set out the conditions of use and the limits of liability.

1. Nature of the Service

The Service is a non-commercial educational and informational website that visualises oceanographic data. There are no accounts and no fees.

Do not use for navigation, diving, or safety. The depths and ocean data shown are reference material derived from public datasets and must not be used as a basis for real navigation or diving decisions. In unsurveyed areas in particular, depth is inferred from satellite gravity measurements and may differ greatly from the actual seafloor.

2. Sources and accuracy

Sources are cited at the foot of the screen and in the footnote of each entry. The principal ones are:

Published depth figures differ between sources depending on survey method and tidal datum; the Service uses the most widely cited value. If you find an error, write to us and it will be checked and corrected.

3. Copyright

4. Prohibited conduct

5. Limitation of liability

The Service is provided as is. The operator makes no warranty as to accuracy, completeness, or fitness for a particular purpose, and to the extent permitted by law accepts no liability for direct or indirect loss arising from use of the Service.

The Service depends on data and infrastructure operated by outside bodies and may therefore be suspended or altered without prior notice.

6. External links

Links in footnotes and source citations lead to sites run by outside organisations. We accept no responsibility for their content or policies.

7. Changes to these terms

If these terms change, the effective date on this page is updated. Continuing to use the Service after a change is taken as acceptance of the revised terms.

8. Governing law

These terms are construed under the laws of the Republic of Korea, and disputes are heard by the court having jurisdiction under its Civil Procedure Act. Where the consumer protection law of your country of residence grants you stronger rights, those rights are not limited by this clause.
