From sea level to the Challenger Deep:
10,935 m at true scale

One pixel on screen is 0.125 m in reality. Nothing has been compressed.

Most deep-sea diagrams shorten the depth so it fits in one image. This site removed that compression. To descend from the surface to the Challenger Deep you have to scroll 88,240 actual pixels. Most of it is black water with nothing in it. That is what this ocean really looks like.

What you will see

Why 71.3%

As of April 2026, humanity has mapped 28.7% of the seafloor at high resolution (GEBCO / Seabed 2030). The rest are values inferred from satellite measurements of sea-surface height — not readings taken by a ship.

The abyssal floor that an eye or a camera has actually seen is just 0.001% (Bell et al., Science Advances, 2025). The surface of Mars is mapped in finer detail than the bottom of our own ocean.

Common questions

Wasn't it 10,994 m?
Sources differ. 10,994 m is a 2012 measurement; this site uses the 10,935 m recorded by the Five Deeps Expedition in 2019. Depending on survey method and tidal datum the figures vary by about ±25 m.

Does it work on mobile?
Yes. The scale stays identical; only the presentation changes.
