ABYSS
Privacy Policy
Effective 2026-08-01 · Last revised 2026-08-04
ABYSS (“the Service”) collects as little personal data as possible. This policy explains what is collected, why, how long it is kept, and how it is deleted.
1. What is collected
| Category | Data | When | Legal basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enquiries | Email, name (optional), message, country of access, browser information | When you submit the contact form yourself | Your consent |
| Usage statistics | Depth band reached, time on page, language, device type (mobile/desktop), visit-count band, whether Resume was used | Automatically when you leave the page | Legitimate interest in improving the Service |
2. Statistics do not identify you
Usage statistics are never stored per session. They accumulate only as daily totals. The following are neither collected nor stored:
- IP addresses or location coordinates
- Session identifiers, cookies, advertising identifiers
- Any value that could distinguish or trace an individual
Depth reached is flattened into six bands — 0–200m / 200m–1km / 1–4km / 4–6km / 6–10km / 10km+ — so no individual can be traced back.
Visit counts work the same way. The count is kept only inside your browser; only one of four bands — 1 / 2–3 / 4–9 / 10+ — is sent to the Service. The Service does not know whose number it is and has no means of linking visits within the same band. It exists to answer one question — “do people come back?” — and is used for nothing else.
3. What is stored in your browser
The values below stay on your device only. They are not transmitted to the Service (only the visit-count band described above is), and they disappear when you clear your browser storage. No tracking cookies are used.
| Name | Purpose |
|---|---|
| abyss-lang | Remembers the language you chose |
| abyss-progress | Last depth reached and personal best — used by “Resume” |
| abyss-visits | Number of visits and time of the last one |
| abyss-eggs | Which easter eggs you have found |
| creatureSoundOn · eggToastOff · menuFold · pwaBannerDismissed · fh_outro_shown | Remembers settings you toggled and notices you have already seen |
Pressing “Start over” on the first screen erases abyss-progress immediately. To erase everything, clear this site’s storage in your browser.
4. Retention
- Enquiries — one year from receipt, then deleted automatically.
- Usage statistics — kept as daily totals for 400 days, then deleted automatically.
5. Disclosure and processors
Collected information is never sold or handed to third parties. The Service does rely on the following providers’ infrastructure to operate.
| Processor | Purpose | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Cloudflare, Inc. | Web hosting; storage of enquiries and statistics | May be stored on servers outside your country, including the United States |
| GitHub, Inc. | Static file repository | No personal data is stored |
| Google LLC | Web fonts | Requested directly by your browser |
The map view loads public oceanographic data from GEBCO, NOAA, Argo and others. These requests carry nothing that identifies you.
6. Your rights
You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of any enquiry you submitted. Write to the address below and it will be handled without delay. Usage statistics cannot be tied to an individual and are therefore not subject to individual deletion requests.
If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, the GDPR gives you rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, objection, and complaint to a supervisory authority. The only personally identifiable information the Service processes is what you type into the contact form yourself.
7. Security measures
- HTTPS end to end
- The admin console is restricted by email authentication (Cloudflare Access)
- Collection limited to the minimum needed for the stated purpose
8. Children
The Service is not directed at children under 14 and does not knowingly collect their personal data.
9. Contact for privacy matters
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| [email protected] | |
| Response time | Within 10 business days of receipt |
10. Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the effective date on this page is updated; significant changes are also announced within the Service.
